Martha! Seriously?

Body + Soul Magazine Promotes BookSwim as "Easier" Than Library
April 19, 2009 - 6:15pm — shelfcheck

Ouch. In the May 2009 issue of Body + Soul magazine--"A Martha Stewart Publication"--"renting a book" via BookSwim is #1 on a list of "6 Simple Ways to Better Your Life and the Planet."

The magazine copy reads, "Looking for a good read? Try renting books Netflix-style with bookswim.com. It's easier than going to the library and greener than buying from the store. Log on and have your picks delivered to your door in recycled packaging."

Pfft. Easier than going to the library?

Call me old fashioned, but part of the reading experience is going to the library.

  • You get to browse.
  • You smell the books.
  • You see people. (And more importantly, you see what those people are checking out and make notes in that little notebook you carry around with you so you know what to pick up next time).
  • You see the upcoming programs.
  • You see the displays and realize that you need to check out that gardening book because your yard does in fact need tending to. (How did they know that?!)
  • IT'S FREE. I'm certain BookSwim isn't. Who would pay for something that's already FREE? Am I missing something here?
After all of these years of promoting Martha's books, she goes and stabs us in the back with her perfectly sharpened kitchen knife. Hmmm.

  1. I guess it's easier for agoraphobics who never want to leave their houses.

  3. But I would suspect that most libraries do a homebound service that would help people like that and still be free. The public library where I worked did homebound and it wasn't a huge metro library. Of course the rest of the country isn't funded as well as Ohio, so they may not offer the extensive services we do.

  4. I think you could still do these kind of things for free the right kind of contract just needs to be worked up.
