Who are your friends?

In this social media age, I have friends, "friends" and FRIENDS.  Facebook and Twitter allow me to befriend wild-eyed strangers, find lost BFF's, and keep in touch with my friends and family near and far.

Statistics say that people are relying more and more on friends than experts, and that's why I have my trusted FRIENDS.

I know lots of people in Ohio libraries, I talk to them, I hear about their families, I solve their OPLIN issues...they are my friends.

As for my other "friends" (people in libraries and PR inside and outside of Ohio whom I have never met), well, I rely on them to keep me in the loop.  They know the field better than I do and keep me informed of the latest and greatest innovations that should be important to me.

Recently I met one of my "friends." David Lee King, the Branch Services Manager at Topeka Shawnee County Public Library, presented at the Social Media for the Social Good workshop sponsored by OLC.  What a strange feeling!  I felt as if I were standing next to a celebrity!

Why is that?  I mean really, he's only a person.  He happens to be a librarian who does his job well.  VERY well.  I think everyone who does their job well should be famous.  Managers should be featuring their star staff members on their web pages and announcing how outstanding they are on Facebook and Twitter every day.  [HINT...HINT, directors!]

Anyway, I'm hoping my "friend's" awesomeness rubs off on me a little!  Oh, and Mr. King, sorry about my glow, it's my halo. Or, it could be a bad pic because we were in front of a window.  It's one of those things.
